Why Do You Get Bored So Easily?
Boredom is not a lack of things to do
The odd thing about boredom is that it survives having options. You can be bored with a phone in your hand, a shelf of books and four hours free, which tells you the problem is not supply. Researchers describe boredom as a failure to get engaged rather than a failure to find something - you want to do something, nothing on offer will do, and the wanting is the uncomfortable part. Three separate things make that happen more often, and they call for opposite responses.
Before you start There are no right answers. Pick what is usually true for you, not what sounds best.
Answer about your ordinary weeks rather than about a particularly empty one. Boredom is normal and nearly universal - what varies is how quickly it arrives.
What it measures
Three things that arrive together and are not the same. Boredom proneness is how readily the state turns up at all. Appetite for novelty is how much stimulation you need before something registers as worth doing. Attention drift is whether you can stay inside a task once you are in it - which is often the real culprit, because a thing you cannot concentrate on becomes boring within minutes regardless of how interesting it is.

Common questions
Is being bored a bad sign?
An episode of it is not - it is a signal that what you are doing is not connected to anything you want, and that is useful information about the situation rather than about you. What the research treats as worth attention is the trait version: boredom that arrives quickly and everywhere, regardless of circumstances. That one is consistently associated with low mood and with impulsive choices made to end the feeling, and it is the version worth working on.
Why am I bored when I have a phone full of things?
Because boredom is about engagement rather than supply, and a phone is very good at supply. Scrolling occupies attention without ever absorbing it, so the feeling is suppressed for as long as the scrolling lasts and returns intact the moment it stops - which is why an hour of it leaves you exactly where you started, only later. The things that actually end boredom tend to be the ones with some difficulty in them, because difficulty is what pulls attention all the way in.
Is boredom ever useful?
Yes, in one specific way: it is uncomfortable enough to move you, and what it moves you towards depends entirely on what is within reach. That is the practical lever. If the easiest thing available when boredom arrives is a screen, it will reliably take you there. If the easiest thing is an instrument left out on the table or a pair of shoes by the door, it will take you there instead, and neither required any willpower - only a difference in what was closest.

An honest note One honest point about the structure of this test. Boredom proneness itself is now generally treated as a single thing: the original scale was thought to have several factors, and later work found those extra factors were mostly an artefact of how the reverse-worded items were written, so the current short scale measures one dimension. That is the first bar. The other two bars are not parts of boredom - they are separate, well-studied things that travel with it and that change what would actually help, which is why they are shown beside it rather than blended into a single score. This is a short adaptation rather than any of those scales. Finally, persistent boredom that will not lift, especially alongside low mood or trouble concentrating that is new for you, is worth mentioning to a doctor rather than treating as a preference.
