Which Element Are You?
Fire, water, earth or air - and what each one costs
The four elements are the oldest personality system there is, and they have outlived every scientific model that came after them for one reason: they are a good vocabulary. Fire, water, earth and air describe four recognisable ways of moving through a day. This is not a measurement of anything, and it does tell you something - mostly about which of the four you would least like to be stuck in a lift with.
Before you start There are no right answers. Pick what is usually true for you, not what sounds best.
Pick what you would actually do, not what would look best. Four minutes.
What it measures
Which of the four classical temperaments your answers lean towards: fire for drive and heat, water for feeling and depth, earth for steadiness and patience, air for ideas and movement. It is a metaphor, not an instrument, and it is a good one.
Possible results
Fire
Nothing moves until you move
Water
You feel the room before anyone speaks
Earth
Everything standing is standing on you
Air
Already three subjects ahead
Common questions
Is this the same as my star sign element?
No connection at all. Astrology assigns elements by birth date; this one assigns them by what you answered. If the two match, that is a coincidence with a one-in-four chance of happening, which is worth remembering the next time a horoscope feels accurate.
I feel like two of them.
Almost everyone does, and the pair is usually more descriptive than the single answer. Fire and air is the person who starts everything and finishes nothing; earth and water is the person everyone leans on and nobody asks after. Read your top result and then read the one you were closest to.
Does any of this mean anything?
As a measurement, no, and we have put it in the Fun section for that reason. As a description it works about as well as any four-box system does, which is to say it will feel accurate and would also have felt accurate if you had got one of the others. If you want the version with evidence behind it, the Big Five is two clicks away and considerably less romantic.
An honest note This one is for fun. Enjoy it, share it, but do not plan your life around it.
