What Is Your Group Chat Role?

Every chat has the same five people. Which one are you?

4 min 10 questions

Open any group chat that has lasted more than a year and you will find the same cast. The one who sends forty messages while everyone is asleep. The one who answers everything with a single image. The one who asks what the plan is, in the thread where the plan was posted. The one who has read every message since 2021 and typed nothing. And the one who, when it matters, actually says the thing. This is a game about the version of you that lives in your phone - which, on some days, is the version that talks to your friends most.

Before you start There are no right answers. Pick what is usually true for you, not what sounds best.

Ten questions about how you behave in the chat. Answer for the group you are actually in, not the one you would like to be in.

What it measures

Which of five recognisable chat habits is yours. This is not the same as the friend-group role test on this site, which is about who you are when everyone is in the same room; this one is about who you are when everyone is in the same thread, which is often a different person.

Possible results

The Flooder

Forty-three new messages. All yours. All before seven.

The Image Replier

You have not typed a sentence since March. You have not needed to.

The One Who Asks What the Plan Is

It was posted at 14:02. Three people confirmed it. You are asking at 14:40.

The Lurker

You have read everything since 2021. You have typed nothing.

The One Who Says the Thing

Thirty messages of circling. One of yours. Decided.

Common questions

How is this different from the friend-group role test?

That one is about the room; this one is about the thread. They come apart more often than you would think: the person who holds the table with stories is frequently the Lurker who never types, and the quiet one at dinner is often the Flooder at midnight. If you get different answers on the two, you have found out something real about yourself, which is that the phone version and the table version are two different people who happen to share a name.

Can a group chat have two of the same role?

It can, and you will know which one yours has doubled. Two Flooders is a chat nobody else can keep up with. Two Image Repliers is an arms race. Two Sayers is a chat where things get decided twice, differently. Two Lurkers is fine - they will never find out about each other. And two of the One Who Asks What the Plan Is means the plan gets restated so often that it is, eventually, the clearest plan the group has ever had.

An honest note This is a game and it measures nothing but your messaging habits, which are a real thing and a small one. There is no good or bad role - a chat with five Sayers would be a committee and a chat with five Image Repliers would be a gallery - and the person you are in a thread is often not the person you are at a table, which is why this test and the friend-group role test on this site can give you two different answers and both be right.
