What Is Your Toxic Trait?

The small thing you do that your friends have discussed without you

4 min 10 questions

Everybody has one. Not a dark secret - a small, repeated habit that the people who love you have learned to work around and occasionally text each other about. The flake who is always nearly there. The fixer who cannot let you just be sad. The one who answers a story with a slightly better story. This is for fun, and it works because the toxic trait is never the thing you would have guessed. It is the thing you think is one of your good qualities.

Before you start There are no right answers. Pick what is usually true for you, not what sounds best.

Ten questions. The honest answer is the slightly embarrassing one, and the whole thing takes four minutes.

What it measures

Which of five harmless-but-annoying habits is most likely yours. It measures nothing clinical. The word toxic is used the way the internet uses it - for the friend-group-level flaw, not for anything that needs a professional.

Possible results

The Flake

You meant it when you said yes. You just meant it less by Thursday.

The Fixer

They wanted to be heard. You handed them a plan.

The Ghost

You were going to reply. You are still going to reply.

The One-Upper

That reminds you of a time. It always reminds you of a time.

The Martyr

It is fine. You will do it. You will also mention it.

Common questions

What if I think I have a different one?

Then you might, and the test only has five. But there is a pattern worth knowing: the toxic trait people guess for themselves is usually the one they have already half-fixed, and the one the test hands them is the one they think of as a virtue. The Fixer thinks they are helpful. The Martyr thinks they are generous. If the result describes something you are slightly proud of, it is probably right.

Is this related to the villain test?

They are cousins. The villain test asks which ordinary motive could, in a story, take you somewhere dark; this one asks which ordinary habit is, right now, mildly annoying your friends. One is a thought experiment about a version of you that does not exist; this one is about the version that will be at dinner on Saturday, assuming the Flake turns up.

An honest note This is a game. The word toxic is used here the way it is used in a group chat - for the small, ordinary, forgivable habit that people who love you have noticed - and not in any clinical sense. None of the five results is a disorder, a diagnosis, or anything that needs treatment; each is a description of a normal way of being slightly annoying, and every one of them comes with a good side that the same friends would also name. If reading your result stings a little, that is the intended dose.
